Many of the early collectible Barbie Dolls were created by well known designers.

Billy Boy.

1985 1st BillyBoy – Le Nouveau Theatre De La Mode. This Barbie doll was created by Billy Boy for Mattel France to commemorate the first Barbie Retrospective exhibit in Paris, France in May 1985. She was a limited edition sold exclusively in Europe, not available in the U.S. Each box was numbered on the front of the box. This doll is numbered out of 10,000 . She is very rare.. Billy Boy only designed two Barbie dolls for Mattel and this one is the first. Beautiful SuperStar head mold, with platinum blonde hair pulled to the back and tied with a black ribbon. She wears a sensational Haute Couture outfit: a tailored sheath dress in black crepe, accessorized with glittering gold metal chain necklace – hoop earrings – chain and bangle bracelets, black sunglasses and finished with black strapped high heels.

1985 Billy Boy BARBIE LE NOUVEAU THEATRE DE LA MODE out of box

This Booklet was created by Billy Boy for Mattel France exhibit in Paris, France. (Info from Gary Frank: The booklet on the facing right was used as a give away for the 1985 Mattel Toy Tour. These booklets along with Billy Boy’s display of designer Barbies tour shopping malls in the first months of 1985. Billy Boy attended a select few. The booklet mentioned is the one with a drawing of Barbie. The Mattel Toy Tour included Barbie, See n’ Say, Hot Wheels, Rainbow Bright, and He Man displays. There were two hired “Barbies” at each mall handing out these booklets. Each stop was a four day event. The Toy Tour continued into the latter part of the year, but the Billy Boy display went back “home”.)

Bob Mackie.

Many of the early collectible Barbie Dolls were created by well known designers. Some of the most popular where designed by Bob Mackie. One of Barbie’s first transformations after so many years with the Superstar face was with the “Mackie Face”, which was first used for Mackie’s 1992 Neptune Fantasy Barbie and then was used more and more for Collectible Barbies. The 1998 Happy Holiday Barbie was the first Holiday Barbie to have the Mackie face.

Karl Otto Lagerfeld.

He was a German creative director, artist, photographer and caricaturist who lived in Paris. He was known as the creative director of the French luxury fashion house Chanel (from 1983 until his death), as well as creative director of the Italian fur and leather goods fashion house Fendi and his own eponymous fashion label. Over the decades, he collaborated on a variety of fashion and art-related projects. He was well recognized around the world for his white hair, black sunglasses, fingerless gloves, and high starched collars. He died at February 19, 2019. He was 85.
