Midge Hadley Sherwood™ is a fictional doll character in the Barbie™ line of toys by mattel. She was first released in 1963. Midge™ was created, along with Skipper™, to counteract criticism that claimed Barbie™ was a sex symbol. She was marketed as Barbie’s best friend. No Midge™ dolls were sold for the rest of the vintage years after the 1960s. She was re-introduced in 1988 as part of the play line, though five vintage reproduction dolls were made specifically for collectors in 1993, 1998, 2008, 2013 and 2022. The dolls sold in this time usually had red hair, often with freckles, and her eye color was usually blue or green.

Also in the period, Wedding Day Midge™ was sold, with the groom being had been marketed as Midge’s™ boyfriend in the vintage years.

After she married Allan/Alan in 1991, she became Midge Hadley Sherwood™. In the 1990s Price Stern Sloan series Adventures with Barbie, she and Alan are married, and in book 5, The Phantom of Shrinking Pond, by Suzanne Weyn, copyright 1992, it’s implied that she is named after her Aunt Margaret (not the same person as Margaret Roberts). In the most recent fictional Barbie™ storyline, often written on the backs of the dolls’ boxes, Midge™ and “Alan™” have three children, two who are named Ryan™ and Nikki™ and one who is not named. This was known as the ♥ Happy Family line™ and was the subject of controversy when Midge™ was sold “pregnant” with Nikki™ as a newborn baby™.

She is named Viky in Brazil.

In 2013, she was brought back in the “Barbie: Life in the Dreamhouse” web series. In the series, she undergoes a makeover to look more modern, though the character tends to act like she is still in the 1960s. There is no mention of Allan/Alan in the series.

1962 HOLIDAY SALE – First Midge Doll and Barbie Doll Fashionsets  – NEWSPAPER AD Full Page.

When Barbie™ first came out, she was the subject of a lot of criticism, some of which that claimed Barbie™ was too mature looking for children. Midge™ was the first same-size friend of Barbie™ ever sold and was created to oppose these controversies aimed at Barbie™. She had a fuller, gentler face mold that was less sexually intimidating, although her body proportions were the same as Barbie™ and they both stood at 11 1/2 inches tall. This allowed the two dolls to be able to share clothes and accessories. Her head mold was stamped “1958”, the same as Barbie™. When Midge™ arrived, the markings on the straight leg body Moldt Hey shared changed to include both her and Barbie™: Midge™ had shoulder-length hair that flipped at the ends. Buyers had an option of buying a doll with one of three different hair colors: red, blond, or brunette. Her face was usually brushed with freckles. The dolls that were sold without freckles had a longer hair style and are now hard to find. Depending on the doll’s hair color, the color of her two-piece swimming suit varied. If Midge™ had red hair her swimsuit was yellow and orange, for blond hair it was in two shades of blue, and if she was brunette, it was pink and red.  All the dolls had white shoes, fashion booklet and a metal doll stand. The first vintage Midge™ dolls now have a value of $350/400 NRFB. 2008 MARKET REPORT: Midge™ dolls have more sellers on eBay than buyers, and except for the very crispest mint dolls, the value has declined for vintage, Straight leg Midge™ in the past 5 years. For the first two years that Midge™ was sold, she had “straight legs” that could not bend at the knee:

• The ‘FIRST’ Midge™ dolls have teeth, rare eyes/ hair and had a rare box with blue hear band, with different box Linner. Mint set in the rare box is extremely hard to find.

• 1965 – 1966 The Fashion Queen Midge™ sold with a different mold head. Available only in the Japan market, the #1009 New Midge™ came with molded brown hair with a center part and no bangs, has a blue painted headband, brown side glancing painted eyes, no freckles, straight non-bending legs and body as the USA Midge doll. She looks very different than the USA sold Midge® doll.  She was dressed in a two-piece swimsuit with a yellow top and orange bottom (same as the USA one for the titian-haired Midge), white open-toe shoes and “peal” earrings. Also included was a one brown wig and rare black doll stand with “Midge™” name on the black bottom. The box from the doll is the same as the USA #860 Midge doll with “straight legs”.

Before Wedding Day Midge™, Midge® dolls still had freckles, but up until Hawaii Midge™ was sold in 1999, the dolls lacked freckles. 2002 – 2006 ” ♥Happy Family” Line™:

The year after Midge™ and Alan™ were married, a picture of the couple with twin babies was shown in a pamphlet, but the dolls were never produced.

However, in 2002, she and Alan™ were re-introduced with a family consisting of them and two different kids, three-year-old Ryan™ and newborn baby Nikki™. This was known as the “Happy Family” line™ and was like the discontinued Heart Family line™ of the 1980s. The dolls came in both European American and African American versions. This was the first time an African American Midge™ was ever produced. Midge™ was sold “pregnant” with Nikki™, who was a tiny baby inside Midge’s™ magnetic removable pregnant stomach.

This led to some controversy. Many people claimed that the doll was inappropriate for children, or that it promoted teen pregnancy. Another cause for this controversy was because Midge™ did not possess a wedding ring at first, but this was later fixed. She also was packaged without Alan™. Customers complaining about the doll led to Wal-Mart pulling the Happy Family line™ off their shelves. An updated version of this Midge™ was produced for Wal-Mart, this time not pregnant and with a cardboard cut-out display of Alan™ and Ryan™ standing next to her inside the box.

The Happy Family Line™ included everything from a talking house, a backyard swimming pool, neighborhood market and playground.

Later, around Nikki’s™ first birthday, Midge™ was “pregnant” again with another child, who wasn’t named or given a specific gender, as the gender was a surprise when the owner opened the doll’s box.

Midge™ has two known parents who are simply called “Grandpa™” and “Grandma™”. At first, the grandparent dolls were sold together as part of a big set consisting of the dolls and a kitchen play set, but for Nikki’s™ first birthday they were sold separately. They too came in both Caucasian and African American versions. They use different body molds, to reflect their age.

1993 – 2014 Midge™ Reproduction Dolls 

A 35th anniversary Midge™ reproduction doll was sold in 1998 for collectors, made to look like the vintage Midge™ dolls. She had red hair, was dressed in her original orange and lime two-piece swimming suit, and came with a reproduction of the Senior Prom™ outfit from 1964-1965 as well as a reproduction of the box the Midge™ dolls originally came in. Earlier in 1993, for Midge’s 30th anniversary™, a Midge™ reproduction doll was also produced, but she did not possess a reproduction of her original swimsuit or the original box. Like the later version, she came in a reproduction of the Senior Prom™ outfit. Also sold in 1993 Enesco Barbie, Midge, and Ken at the Hop Music Box.

To celebrate her 60th Anniversary, we created this collectible reproduction of her original beachy look: a classic two-piece yellow and orange swimsuit with white-heeled mules. She features her classic freckled face sculpt and titan hair with rolled bangs and bouncy curls, but this is the first time she has a Silkstone body.
